Advocates Recognize New TxDOT Leaders

February 29, 2012

The Transportation Advocates of Texas (TAoT) held a reception February 15th honoring Ted Houghton, recently named chairman of the Transportation Commission, and Phil Wilson, TxDOT’s new executive director.

Jim Reed, TAoT Board Chairman, noted that TxDOT is in the process of reinventing itself and that strong, wise leadership of the Department of Transportation is essential.

Houghton, who has been a member of the Commission since 2003, told the gathering that Texas is going to have to look at additional revenues and revenue sources if it is to maintain the state’s transportation infrastructure.

Wilson, who was named executive director in October, had high praise for the TxDOT organization and for the caliber and dedication of the TxDOT staff statewide.

In his introduction Reed stressed that the local governments and organizations that make up the Transportation Advocates of Texas are dedicated to helping find funding solutions.  He said TAoT will help provide the leadership needed to develop robust, predictable and sustainable transportation funding.

The reception was held just before the opening of the 7th Annual Texas Transportation Forum which had more than 1,300 participants this year.  Wilson urged attendees to remain open to new ideas and approaches to addressing the state’s transportation challenges.

The Transportation Advocates were joined by 38 partnering organizations in sponsoring the reception honoring Chairman Houghton and Mr. Wilson.
